The Gresta Valley stretches from the Lake Loppio basin to over 2000 meters of Monte Stivo and is bordered by Mount Creino to the west and Monte Biaena to the east. This valley differs from the other valleys in Trentino since, as the name suggests, it consists of mountain ridges that give rise to terraces where the various inhabited centers have developed. The valley is famous for the cultivation of organic products, especially potatoes, carrots, zucchini and cabbage: this is why it is called “the organic garden of Trentino”. In addition to the gardens in Val di Gresta, the findings of the First World War are also different.
The valley was declared a militarily strategic zone following the entry into the war of the Kingdom of Italy. The location of the valley was extremely important as it allowed to control the traffic to and from Riva del Garda and towards Rovereto. Moreover, Val di Gresta dominates the valley of the Cameras, which together with Loppio, constituted the line of separation between the two fronts
Our route begins and ends in Nago. It is a ring tour that will allow us to enjoy the valley in its fullness. We start with the cycle track that will take us to the coastline of Lake Loppio. Then a sweet but long climb that will help us discover the various villages: San Felice Valley, Varano, Pannone and Ronzo Chienis. During the uphill climb we will have more opportunities to move from the main road and use the narrow streets and forest roads that pass through the courtyards and the gardens of the valley. Arriving at Bordala we will have lunch. The descent will take place on the opposite side of the climb with the chance to stop and see the remains of the First World War. The descent requires attention and experience with MTB even if the few demanding trails can be easily avoided on foot. The west side of the mountain will again head to Nago with beautiful views of Lake Garda.
