The MTB path we propose is winding on the slopes of Mount Zugna, south-east of the city of Rovereto, in southern Trentino. The itinerary crosses the Dantesque Ruins of the Lavini di Marco, quoted by the great poet Dante in his Divine Comedy and current venue of the important discovery of numerous dinosaur prints that can be visited through an interesting nature trail. Here Footsteps of hundreds of carnivorous and herbivore dinosaurs of different shapes and sizes are imprinted along a steep hills of about two hundred meters at the Lavini di Marco, at the slopes of Mount Zugna, in the South of Rovereto.
The rocky outcrops are referred to at the beginning of Jurassic, some 200 million years ago, and represent what remains in the fossil state of a large tidal carbonate plane in many respects comparable to the present coasts of the Persian Gulf. These are six stratigraphic layers included in a powerful layer pack of just over five meters. Access to the site without a guided tour is free. Along the way, sculptured and silk-screened stone panels have been installed to allow all citizens to enter the world of geological history of the territory.
The departure is from Rovereto. We will go through the streets of the center by going beyond the War Museum that stands on our left and crossing the Leno stream we will walk via Santa Maria and Benacense. After a few kilometers we will reach the town of Marco. We will climb up to 400m along the “Road of the Artillery” built during the First World War for the supply of the front and here you can visit the educational path that will lead us to the discovery of the dinosaur prints.
For those who do not like the asphalt, shortly after being lead out onto the road to Mount Zugna you can still hold the left and take a path that runs parallel to the road and reaches it more downstream near the Porte park, just before reaching Rovereto. Once in Santa Maria you can follow the way to the center of Rovereto.
Technical notes:
An average, though brief, trail. Demanding good physical condition and discreet technical mastery of the bicycle.
