Castel Beseno. Like a ship in the midst of the mountains, it is on the hillside. This complex fortification exerts fear and evokes mysteries and curiosities. What’s up there? What will be inside there? This bike tour was made just to answer your questions. Starting from Rovereto, going up the Adige Valley to Besenello, along the beautiful bicycle track, you will arrive just below the fortress. After a break for a coffee, you can leave your bikes on the spot and go up the steep road to the castle or, if you feel like it, try biking while knowing that fatigue, though short, will be remarkable. Except for those who have the E-Bike obviously …! Once you arrive at the fortress you will be able to admire a wonderful panorama of the valley. We will go for a guided tour inside the defensive complex where we will discover up close the aspects and conditions in which the people of the time were living.
The Middle Ages will appear to us for what it was, with all its exciting, romantic, but very contradictory aspects. Clashes and blood were on the agenda. Life passed precariously between violence and hardness. The Field of Tournaments, the Dark Bastion door, the Courts inside. It would seem to come back to life with the time machine. Wonderful. And now a good lunch at the Rupe Restaurant. A menu of all respect and quality for the tastes of every palate. A relaxing and peaceful break where you can enjoy unique and serene moments. The itinerary will continue with the descent to Besenello for the next stop at the other medieval manor. Literally gorgeous: Castel Pietra.
Here we will stop again, suspended and surrounded again by a magical atmosphere created by this castle in the forest. A tasting of excellent wines produced in this large estate managed by the Bertagnolli Family and a short tour will end the tour before returning to Rovereto again on the same road.
Some historical facts:
The famous Battle of Calliano: Marcabruno II Castelbarco, is in the middle of the diatribes between the troops of Venice and those of Trentino and Tyrol; It is precisely in this regard that the Battle of Calliano (1487) develops, where six thousand Venetians were killed or captured. It was a real defeat for the Venetians and their commander Roberto Sanseverino d’Aragona, who died drowning in the Adige. The vicissitudes did not end so soon: towards the end of the eighteenth century it was again the protagonist of a bloody siege by the Napoleonic troops who, despite the enormous deployment, could not have the best, being defeated after days of siege by a column Of Austrian troops in defense of Castel Beseno.
An unbeatable fortress that is the paradox of history and today is possible to visit in complete relaxation by means of our wonderful bicycles.
Technical notes:
Unpaved path except the steep road that Besenello climbs on the hill of the castle. It is possible to walk on foot in about half an hour and include it in the tour.
